Application of Work Group Methodologies in the Implementation of a Lean Production System

Work groups are essential to the successful implementation of any change efforts. The implementation of a Lean Production System (LPS) is highly dependent on the work group structure. Failure to properly lay the foundation for this new organizational structure will prevent the successful implementation of LPS. Buy-in for this methodology by management, union leadership, professional employment, and union represented employees is essential. This article will describe the evaluation of the current situation from a representative sample of plant and management personnel involved in the implementation of LPS. A model was developed to the relationships between key characteristics associated with effective work groups. In this study, it was found that management support is a key driver for successful implementation of LPS but from a traditional management perspective.
